Greentip Lookout was an isolated, single-tower structure built in 1826, when the Vampiric Wars caused the Blackrocks to relocate from Germany to their new home in Colorado. Fearing that the war would follow them West, they built outposts far from their new home in every direction, so they would have as much advance warning as possible to guard against an attack. Their foresight was rewarded when Greentip detected a Vampiric Horde approaching Blackridge from the South, along a snowy trail ironically called the Green Mile. But now it was mostly symbolic, as it had been replaced by newer, farther outposts equipped with all the latest technology and spells. Greentip was an honor post, a crumbling tower manned by one guard, changed every three days.

Liam could see absolutely no reason for his father to need him to check it.

Except to get rid of him.

Liam fought his frustrations as Charley descended to the open field at the base of the structure. The tower leaned slightly to the left, and even though it was much smaller than its famous cousin in Pisa, Italy, it still evoked comparisons. The stone obelisk was about three stories high and was decorated by columns twirling their way around the stone, to give the impression of a winding staircase. Inside, Liam knew it was a ruin, left hollow as a testimony to all those who had fallen in defense of the Blackrock clan.

Liam thought back to his conversations with Vance. There had to be something to the fact that Agavva had come aboard twelve years ago, and that Ieremiya had not been back to Blackridge since. Liam hadn’t had too many interactions with the Ancient One – he hadn’t taught any of the Espionage and Detection classes because he’d been tasked with Surveillance at the Castle – and he remembered him as a creature of few words, with bushy, angry eyebrows but a kind heart. Liam remembered a training mission he’d once overseen that had been an abject failure – the scouting team had been discovered by the “enemy” and all the subsequent troops “routed.” He’d expected a shouting match from the Russian Magus, yet all he’d received was a few quiet questions as to how he could do better the next time.

Liam shook his head. He had a hard time believing Agavva had overlooked a ghost in the Castle, knowing how deliberate he was with his craft. Of course, that could always have been a ruse… or maybe there was more here than met the eye. Maybe Agavva had simply been aware of the ghost? And so had his father? And they just hadn’t told him about it?

No, Liam decided as Charley touched down on the hard ground. His father would’ve told him about everything he needed to know when he promoted him to Head of Surveillance. Especially a ghost that roamed the premises, possessing students and convincing them to kill themselves.

Liam dismounted and surveyed the tower. It was still leaning, all right, but there was something missing.
